The Tragedy of Vanitor – Act 1 – Section B

The Arrogance of Ascension

I returned to the cliff,
and to the Eye.
For nature,
she has failed me.

Staring down from the cliff
with jealousy at those
who hold their beliefs
with such fortitude and grit,
I glare at those living in certainty.

My journey began last year,
in my foolish pride I thought
I could mentally ascend above
mere ideologies, religions, and worldviews.

I doubted certainty itself,
tore down the strongholds of the absolute,
reached the summit where at long last
I looked out upon my conquest.

I believed I stood alone,
the sole member of the human race
not given to the evils of tribalism.
I cussed its corrupting nature upon mankind.
